Everything You Need to Know About National Science Olympiad Exam

One of the most prestigious school level competitive exams in India, National Science Olympiad (NSO) is conducted for the students of 1st- 12th standard to acknowledge their academic talents. Every year, thousands of little geniuses participate in this exam which is organised by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). 

The exam is divided into two levels and aims to recognize the academic ability and potential of talented students by giving them a national platform. The students who qualify the levels with flying colours are then felicitated with attractive cash prizes, medals and certificates, all depending on their scores.

Here is Everything You Need to Know About the National Science Olympiad Exam

Eligibility

The participants appearing for the NSO should be the students who are studying in classes 1st to 12th. In addition, the students can only participate if their school is participating in the exam.

Students can appear in the examination only once in an academic year. 

The students appearing for the Level 2 exam have different criteria that are listed below:

The participants must hold a rank in top 5% of students’ class wise who appeared for the level 1 exam

They should be in top 25 rank holders state wise for their respective class

They should be class toppers from their participating school where at least ten students from a class appear in the exam and have scored 50% qualifying marks

Levels

There are two levels of National Science Olympiad: 

Level 1: The first level is organised in the premises of the participating schools during the normal school hours. It is an objective-type test with a duration of 60 minutes comprising 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.

Level 2: The second level is conducted for students of class 3 to class 12. The eligibility of the students who can appear for the Level 2 exam has already been discussed in the previous pointer.
Registration

Registration Forms: Science Olympiad Foundation sends prospectus that contains the registration forms to every school that can dully fill it and submit to SOF within the stipulated time. The schools that do not receive the prospectus may request for one by contacting the Foundation either via call or mail at info@sofworld.org. Every school must have at least 10 participants to be a part of NSO. 

Fees: The students are required to pay a nominal fee, part of which is used by the school for the expenses as exam centre. Other necessary information about the payment mode and charges are explained in the registration forms. 

Roll Number: The schools generate roll numbers as per the guidelines that are given by SOF. Later, they forward the roll numbers and other vital details such as students’ Registration Sheet (SRS) and School Registration Form (SRF) to the SOF for thefurther registration process.
Important Dates

The Level 1 of National Science Olympiad is conducted on two dates, and the schools can choose a date as per their convenience. However, the decided dates cannot be changed in future. 

Level 1 Exam Date: 9th and 23rd November 2017

Level 2 Exam Date: Awaited
Preparation

Most of the syllabus of National Science Olympiad is similar to the syllabus the students have in their respective classes. Hence, the students must cover their school syllabus and work on their fundamentals.  In addition to this, to prepare well for National Science Olympiad Exam, many coaching institutes like Aakash Institute also offer study material that is mainly prepared by the experts. It is crucial that the students should understand the exam pattern well, evaluate it and then prepare accordingly.
